What if you lost your twitter posts?

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact MultimediaI poses this question as I wondered, I have control of my website, my blog and many other things, so I can back them up easily, but what about my twitter account.

What if the information I put up on there wasn’t saved anywhere else, what would I do if twitter closed it’s doors, how valuable is that information and what would it cost to replace?

FEAR NOT – Just go to the site below and let it back up for you – Genius!

Simple chatrooms online, using text, audio, video or all!

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact MultimediaI came across this site during one of my research of new things on the internet and whilst this is not a new idea, it’s certainly got more of a Web 2.0 feel to it from most of the others I’ve used in the past.

What’s really good about this as well is how easy it is to use, honestly if you have a twitter or Facebook account login, choose a room name, invite people to it and blam! you’re good  to go – couldn’t be easier! You can even share your desktop with people, so it’s like having a free webinar program at your finger tips and will cost nothing!

Here’s the link http://tinychat.com

I’m going to try to schedule a chatroom session once every 1,2 or 4 weeks and give out web design advice, so basically a Q & A session, what could you do with it?

Before I do however I would like to guage how popular this would be so please leave a comment for me on this blog post, cheers.

Free Target Traffic directed from your own niche

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact MultimediaOk the jury is still out on this one as I’m still testing it, but I figured that if more of us tested it then we might all be able to tell each other what seems to work well or not, are you up for it?

No – ok thanks for reading you can now take the blue pill and go about your day as normal.

Yes – ok reach for that glass of water, swallow and get ready.

Download this file and have a read at it then go to one of the links in it.

I’m not going to lie I didn’t write it (some good info though) and there is a sort of affilite link scheme going on with it, but as you will see with a free account it’s not really a big deal and the potential to get lot’s of targetted traffic I think is worth trying out at least.

If you do sign up please keep in touch as I would like to compare notes and hope that if this does work we can all benefit from each other.

Why is there no space on my hard drive???

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact MultimediaI’m sure you’ve come across this scenario at least once.

Either you’re trying to install a new program or copy some files, but the system hits you with that lovely ERROR noise or if you’re lucky at the very least a little box saying insufficient space available.

So you think to yourself if only I didn’t have to go through all my folders and try to find out where the space is being taken up, because it’s going to take ages to do that. If only there was a program I could use to find out the folder sizes and files at an easy glance. At least then I can go to the biggest potential trouble spots quickly.

This is something all operating should have a better version of in my opinion. Anyway we don’t need to depend on them as other people out there know that this needs a better solution and thankfully have delivered.

For now the solutions below are for Windows only machines, I will do some research to see if there are Apple Mac versions (if you know of any please get in touch), I don’t think the Linux community need my help on this subject ;-)

http://windirstat.info

This is a fairly comprehensive one and the is the software I’m using on my desktop right now. It’s got a really nice way of visualising the folders and files once it’s done it’s scan. it even colour codes types of files for you that you can click an it highlights then in the box below – Genius!

Cost: Nada, nothing it’s completely FREE!

http://foldersize.codeplex.com

This one isn’t as detailed as the one above but it does have the advantage of being portable, which means it doesn’t need to be installed. So you can stick on an external hard hdrive or Thumb Drive and run it on any windows computer.

Cost: Again Nada, nothing it’s completely FREE!

I hope that this is useful to you.

Google Analytics – Intelligence Engine

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact Multimedia*EDIT 1: It has been brought to my attention that not all accounts have this option yet, but it should appear soon*

*EDIT 2: I’ve noticed some accounts with the Intelligence section now added to UK accounts, so you should now be able to take advantage of the information below*

Ok so you’ve got Google Analytics and you know generally how to use it. Well Google have added a new feature called the ‘Intellegence Engine’, here’s what google have to say about the subject.

Analytics Intelligence: We’re launching the initial phase of an algorithmic driven Intelligence engine to Google Analytics. Analytics Intelligence will provide automatic alerts of significant changes in the data patterns of your site metrics and dimensions over daily, weekly and monthly periods. For instance, Intelligence could call out a 300% surge in visits from YouTube referrals last Tuesday or let you know bounce rates of visitors from Virginia dropped by 70% two weeks ago. Instead of you having to monitor reports and comb through data, Analytics Intelligence alerts you to the most significant information to pay attention to, saving you time and surfacing traffic insights that could affect your business. Now, you can spend your time actually taking action, instead of trying to figure out what needs to be done.

Custom Alerts make it possible for you to tell Google Analytics what to watch for. You can set daily, weekly, and monthly triggers on different dimensions & metrics, and be notified by email or right in the user interface when the changes actually occur.

If you’re not sure about all that here’s a nicely described video of the features it has.

Virgin Trains email, as bad as spam – Your flight details

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact MultimediaOk this isn’t spam, but it certainly felt like it when I got it through.

This email really peeved me off and wasted about 10 mins of my time and took me off my chain of thought while I tried to figure out if someone had hacked into my virgin account.

Had I just read the email a little bit more I would have discovered that this was them just trying to be clever. They wanted to show how much less hassle it is to take the train than fly to London.

The problem is had they not done it in such an alarming way this would have been a good email, but all it’s done is annoy me as a customer as I genuinely thought someone had logged into my account and use my details to book a ticket.

If you’re considering doing a newsletter campaign take this lesson and make sure you think about how it appears to the person getting it, you really don’t want them calling you up to complain about the hassle they’ve you’ve put them through.

Here’s the actual email content so you can see what I’m talking about.

Virgin Trains email as bad as spam

Spam Warning – Western Union transfer is available for withdrawl

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact MultimediaTodays spam email is about Western Union.

This one comes with an attachment called ‘MTSN_87743484.zip’ the content is very plausable, but you should ask the obvious question who is sending you that money. Generally you will know to be expecting it and if you are already expecting money then the totals should be completely different.

Also note that a typical sign of a spam email is the generic ‘Dear Customer’ if they have you’re email address and it involves money the chances are they have your actual name or at the very least a reference number you can check somewhere else.

I’m not familiar with Western Unions methods of transferring money, so I’m not sure how they alert you to the fact that there is money to be collected or if that’s even possible. Maybe the money gets wired direct to an account and the only notification is the person sending you the money telling you or you checking you’re bank statement.

Either way I wouldn’t trust anything that seems to good to be true like this and there are many examples out there.

————————————–

Dear customer.

The amount of money transfer: 1037 USD.

Money is available to withdrawl.

You may find the Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) and receiver’s details in document attached to this email.

Got Windows 7, but can’t be bothered re-installing some apps

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact MultimediaSo you get the new windows 7 or you’ve had to re-install windows on your machine. You’ve lost all those great applications that you found online that were free.

What do you need to do? well here are the three annoying things that I had to do to find the programs I used, not just everyday, but occasionally once a year but it was handy to have.

First was that you had to remember them and find them online, second was to download them, then finallay third, spend all that time clicking next, next, next, tick the box I agree (of course I do if I don’t I can’t use the program and I’m never going to read you 1000 pages of terms).

If only there was a way to cut down on all that, if only some clever people came up with a site that had it all in one place, had a simple install procedure and only made you click next on the really important stuff.

Thank you internet and http://ninite.com

This is one of my favorite finds in recent weeks as there are many programs I use on there, so when I get my brand new laptop this is going to save me loads of time!

The World of Tomorrow (If The Internet Disappeared Today)

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact MultimediaThankfully someone thought about this and ran a little competition to find out what people would come up with.

Her’e the link to the site http://www.cracked.com/photoshop_90_the-world-tomorrow-if-internet-disappeared-today/

For those who have no idea what the winner got it for, this is a prank that has been going on for a while now where it’s a bit like the ring a door bell and run away stuff when you were a kid.

Basically this is the same idea using video and the internet, although you easily get caught since it’s your email address -DOH! It starts of with something that would be relevant to the person watching it, then out of nowhere Rick Astley shows up singing his song – you’ve just been Rick Rolled!

If you still can’t get your head around it here’s a link to a blog dedicated to it and one of the better videos (there many good ones on you tube) http://www.yougotrickrolled.com/vids.php

I really like some of the other interpretations on the site, I wonder what the world would have been like if the internet never exsisted at all, guess we’ll never get to know – long live the internet (or as my flat mate likes to call it the tinterweb)!

Wed design Glasgow Owner of Contact MultimediaI had a previous post that had a site that checked for over 80 social media sites for your name. Now this was great and saved a lot of time and effort.

Imagine my surprise when I came across this site that has over 340 websites you can check in one go!
